Why is bone health important?

Bones play an important role in the body’s health. They provide structure, protect the heart, lungs and brain from injury, secure muscles and store calcium. Osteoporosis, the most common bone disease, causes bones to become weak, brittle and break easily. Osteoporosis is called a “silent disease” because, typically, there are no symptoms until a bone is broken.

Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and another 44 million have low bone density, which puts them at increased risk. One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will have a broken bone due to osteoporosis.

As there are no signs or symptoms of osteoporosis, bone density testing is an important way to check for bone health. Finding and treating the disease early can help lower the risk of breaking bones.
